Street Art Tour
Challenge: Working with Croud, we were tasked to work on a brief for Virgin Trains to create a walking guide of Manchester’s Northern Quarter graffiti hotspots, to accompany a related blog. We were asked to develop an illustrative style that captured the energy of the area whilst remaining understandable as a map. The guide would need to work as a digital and printed document, and feature a set of cropped teasers to use on social media channels.
Solution: Good information design is all about striking the perfect balance between clarity of the information and creating something that is visually engaging. We needed to create a functioning map and then introduce the illustration style, without the functionality of the guide suffering. We did this by including key street names and landmarks but stripping out geographical information that was superfluous, allowing more space for illustrative elements.
We wanted to make sure that the map captured the spirit and personality of the Northern Quarter so we did a lot of research into landmarks that were recognisable in the community. There were plenty of shops, bars and businesses that lent themselves to being represented visually which really adds to the energy of the map.
